A new threat-The Asian Tiger Mosquito

Have you heard of the new emerging threat in the insect world? It is the Asian Tiger Mosquito, aptly named for the black and white stripes on its back.

This mosquito was thought to be introduced to the US through tire shipments from Asia. There are several things that make this mosquito more threatening than our average mosquitos.

  • The Asian Tiger Mosquito has a bloodlust for humans and is very aggressive.
  • They are active day and night as opposed to mostly dusk/evening activity for other mosquitoes.
  • It's bite is reported to be very painful and is describe as a "stabbing feeling" in people who have been bitten.
  • This mosquito transmits all the diseases, such as Lyme Disease, that native mosquitoes do with one addition: Chikungunya.  This is a disease for which there is no cure or treatment.  This disease causes debilitating symptoms like fever, severe joint pain, vomiting and severe fatigue.  These symptoms usually dissipate within a few weeks.
Currently the Asian Tiger Mosquito has been spreading throughout the US quickly-especially the East Coast-because its' eggs are strong enough to survive our winters.

SUMMER BUMMER: LYME DISEASE

Preventing mosquito and tick bites

The kids are out of school, the weather is much warmer and vacations are planned.  Ahh, the joy of Summer.

But there is a summer bummer: Lyme disease.  Unfortunately it is prime time for ticks and mosquitoes, both carriers and transmitters of the debilitating disease.

The old saying goes "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." So here are some preventative tips you can use yourself to help prevent ticks and mosquitoes from biting:

TICKS
* Wear light colored clothing. This will make it easier to detect any ticks trying to find the feast!
* When in tall grass or wooded areas, wear long pants, long sleeved shirt and closed toe shoes.  The less
    exposed skin the better.
* Use a bug spray containing DEET.  Spray your clothes before putting them on and spray your body also.
* Keep your lawn cut short.
*Always inspect yourself and your pets after being outside.

MOSQUITOES
*Try not to be outdoors at dusk and dawn-the two busiest times of day for mosquitoes.
* Mosquitoes tend to be attracted to dark and/or flower patterned clothing so try to wear lighter, solid color clothing.
* Get rid of any standing water (including kiddie pools) as this can be a breeding spot for mosquitoes.

With a little bit of planning your summer fun will be safe and bite free!
